The Woods Academy

Annual Fund

After a wildly successful 40th Anniversary school year, The Woods Academy is excited to build the legacy forward this year. This is contingent on our supporters or, owlvocates as we call them, people like you, continuing to transform our school through generous giving.

Owlvocate n: A person who gives significant time, talent, and treasure to transform the lives of Woods Academy students.

Owlvocates are all around us at The Woods including our cherished Faculty & Staff. They always give their time and talent to our children, but have once again given their treasure by reaching the 100% giving level for the 5th straight year. Let all of us strive to be the most generous owlvocates we can be too.

Giving to The Woods Academy Annual Fund affords you the rare opportunity to invest in the students of The Woods. This tax deductible investment is guaranteed to produce an exponentially positive return over a lifetime and is applied wherever the need is the greatest…

Annual Fund FAQs

What is it?
The Woods Academy affords all family members the rare opportunity to invest in the students of The Woods when you make a fully tax deductible gift to the Annual Fund. Our generous culture of philanthropy annually depends on significant and unrestricted Annual Fund contributions from trustees, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, alumnae, faculty and staff, corporations, foundations, and friends to elevate our incredible school from adequate to inspirational.

Goal?
The goal is to raise $300,000+ and have 100% of all parents make a significant gift.

Timeline?
In the fall each year, you will be asked to give but you can make a gift at any time. The Woods Academy's fiscal year runs from July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017. You can pledge now and make your gift later as long as it comes in before June 30, 2017. Many donors make a gift coinciding with calendar year-end to capture an annual tax benefit, use work bonuses to fund their gifts, and also enhance their giving by securing a matching gift from their employer (see below under Ways to Give).

Give How Much? All families are asked to keep The Woods Academy in the top three of their philanthropic priorities while their children are students. We ask everyone to give to their utmost capability but we understand that individual financial situations vary. Participation is a vital indicator of the financial strength of The Woods Academy to prospective families and other donors.

Securities
The Woods Academy accepts gifts of securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds) that have appreciated in value. By giving appreciated long-term stock directly to The Woods Academy, a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization, you may receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full value of the stock. Gifts of securities are valued at the median price on the date of transfer to The Woods Academy. None of the appreciation is taxable for capital gains purposes. The Woods Academy cannot sell stock unless the name of the donor is stipulated. Consequently, donors cannot receive credit for "unclaimed" stock gifts. Please consult with your tax advisor for questions or concerns before taking this action. If you decide to donate in this manner, please follow the directions below. A gift receipt will be sent immediately. Please direct any questions to Chris Stewart, Director of Development, at cstewart@woodsacademy.org or 301-365-3080.

Matching Gift
Many employers will match your charitable contribution. Matching gifts may allow you to double or even triple your gift to the school. For example, the Angelos Family (Tim Angelos and Nitsa Stamoulis-Angelos) recently made a leadership level gift to The Woods Academy. This was then very generously matched by Tim's employer, Hewlett-Packard, by a factor of 4 to 1. The combined efforts resulted in 18 new HP EliteBook Notebooks being purchased for immediate use in the classroom! Leveraging philanthropy can be so powerful in supporting our Woods Academy family!

Please check with your employer’s human resources department to find out if your employer has a program and how to participate. If your employer does not have a current matching gift program, you may ask them to consider starting one. Generally, employers have forms, web-based applications, or a phone system in place to process the matching gift. Once you complete the form you may include it with your check or mail it after the gift has been made. We will do the rest to ensure your gift is matched. Please direct any questions to Chris Stewart, Director of Development, at cstewart@ woodsacademy.org or 301-365-3080.

In Memory or To Honor Gift
Each year The Woods Academy receives gifts in memory of or to honor classmates, parents, teachers, students and friends. When memorial or honoring gifts are received, The Woods Academy notifies the family. In some instances, special funds are established which may become capital or endowed funds. Please direct any questions to Chris Stewart, Director of Development, at cstewart@woodsacademy.org or 301-365-3080.

Planned/ Estate Gift
Leaving a bequest or planned gift to The Woods Academy can transform the lives of our students. There is no more powerful way to create a legacy than by donating from your will or trust. The continuation of this tradition of remembrance ensures that The Woods Academy will be financially strong for many generations to come. A bequest is deductible for federal estate tax purposes, and there is no limit on the amount of the deduction. In addition, bequests generally are not subject to state inheritance or estate taxes. You can make a specific bequest using sample language such as this in your will: "I give, devise and bequeath to Our Lady of The Woods Corporation (doing business as The Woods Academy), 6801 Greentree Road, Bethesda, MD 20817, the sum of $__________ (or describe the specific property you intend to bequeath)." You can make a percentage bequest using sample language such as this: "I give, devise and bequeath to Our Lady of The Woods Corporation (doing business as The Woods Academy), 6801 Greentree Road, Bethesda, MD 20817____% of my estate, both real and personal property of whatever kind and where so ever situated." Residual and contingent bequests are other forms you may want to consider. Please direct any questions to Chris Stewart, Director of Development, at cstewart@woodsacademy.org or 301-365-3080.
