Chess - The Ultimate Competition
Mr. Alisbah, 7th & 8th Grade Science Teacher & Chess Instructor

Many students at The Woods play chess as an after-school activity. Unlike many other forms of competition, there's no luck involved. Chess can't be won or lost on the random roll of a dice, or the pick of a card, or because a piece of equipment broke, or because the ref missed a foul. It's just one brain versus the other - no outside factors, no excuses. Chess is the ultimate competition.

This past weekend several of our students showcased their talents at The Rock Creek Council Knights of Columbus Annual Youth Chess Tournament at Rock Creek Council Mansion in Bethesda. Each age group was comprised of over fifty players and each competitor played four 25 minute matches. The Woods Academy Team finished in 2nd Place overall just a few points shy of 1st Place.

Congratulations to Nicholas C. (5) who won 2nd Place in his age group!

Congratulations to Pierce B. (4) who won the Sportsmanship Award!

Be sure to check out photos from the tournament in the Chess Album on Vidigami.
