First grade wrapped up the school year by studying author, Eric Carle. The students truly enjoyed reading Eric Carle's books and they have integrated this study across the curriculum. The first graders have made a connection to telling time through reading, The Grouchy LadyBug. In addition, the students were able to talk about the character traits of the grouchy ladybug and the friendly ladybug. Walter the Baker, allowed students to discuss and write about story elements and learn new vocabulary.
One of our favorite books was A House for Hermit Crab. Eric Carle inspired our students to demonstrate their creativity when each student was able to design their version of a dream house. This motivated us to write about our dream house using many details and amazing words. Through our author study, first grade was able to put into practice many reading strategies that we have learned this year.
