Today, I had the privilege of welcoming back students in the Upper School with our first Chapel of the year. It was so nice to see the students online and we had a very packed agenda. We were led in our prayer by Mr. Randall Bednar and praying as a community was a great way to kick off the year. Then, students were introduced to Dr. Andy Rhein and Mrs. Michlik. Each were able to detail their supports for student learning and guidance, and all students were encouraged to reach out if the felt the need.
Our first reflection was centered on an interview given by the late Chadwick Boseman and his work with children suffering from cancer. It is a very powerful video and one, that I feel, depicts the true nature of selfless character.
We were also able to discuss Distance Learning Student Expectations for the year as well as some tips for a successful academic experience. We included the concept of academic integrity and students will fill out an electronic honor code promising to do their own work and maintain their academic integrity.
Finally, I told the students a Welcome Back Story with Gifs and Meme’s to help them try to reflect on the Spring and how they can improve on their performance during distance learning.
Mr. Bednar closed out chapel with a prayer and some important words and advice for students as we begin Distance Learning on Tuesday. A major theme of the Chapel was community and helping others in need. We will continue to look at these themes throughout the year.
Students also received a homework assignment for our next Chapel. Students will read the last written words of the late Congressman John Lewis. He was a transformative figure and will be a topic of discussion in our next Chapel on September 14.
All in all, it was a great start to our virtual year.
