On Friday, May 28, The Woods Academy community gathered virtually for a Prayer Service to recognize Head of School Joe Powers and his 10 years of leadership. Mr. Powers came to The Woods in 2011 after serving as Headmaster at Washington Jesuit Academy. Mr. Powers has been a strong and patient leader of approximately 65 faculty and staff members and 300 students at the school. During his tenure, he has been known to throw a football around at recess, shake hands (pre-pandemic) or take temperatures (during the pandemic) at morning carpool, read books to the Montessori preschool and kindergarten students, teach principles of investment and entrepreneurship to fifth graders, make chicken pot pies with Woods families on MLK Jr. Day of Service, and even pick up a brush to paint a still life. Most importantly, Mr. Powers serves as a strong voice and advocate for The Woods Academy, promoting our mission and Catholic identity.
In honor of Mr. Powers’ Tenth Anniversary, the Eighth Grade Leadership Network organized a can food drive to benefit Nourish Now, an organization that provides food to a diverse population of people in need and relies upon the generosity of donors. A strong call to service is one of the ways that The Woods, an inclusive Catholic community, prepares boys and girls to lead lives of significance.
