First Grade studied fact families during their math block. All students were able to create a fact family house and place it in a fact family village on a large piece of construction paper.
The roof of the fact family house is the fact family triangle. The body of the house is the addition and subtraction sentences.
As students made their addition and subtraction sentences they were able to realize that they can use the same numbers to make related facts. Another benefit to this lesson is students are able to learn four facts at a time!
We enjoyed sharing our Fact Family fun on a large bulletin board outside of our classroom. It was great to demonstrate our math thinking with our Fact Family Village as evidence of our learning. Way to go, grade one!
