Throughout the month of March, second grade is focusing on Ireland as a unit across all subjects. We believe using an integrated curriculum helps students to have an in-depth learning experience. Through the implementation of an integrated curriculum, we guide students to see the connections and relevance between subjects. An integrated curriculum is a student-centered approach to teaching.
Currently, we are studying the country of Ireland in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Religion.
In Language Arts, students are writing creative prompts about St. Patrick’s Day, leprechauns, and clovers.
In Social Studies, we are studying the demographics of Ireland along with their culture and traditions.
In Religion, we are discussing the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, and The Holy Trinity - God the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.
This model of teaching encourages students to refer to visuals and information across all three academic subjects in order to higher their thinking and broaden their informational knowledge. It has been a fun unit to teach and even more exciting to observe students formulating connections!
