After arriving back to school from summer break, we started the school year off by doing two weeks of fun games to get reacquainted with each other and organized activities. We then did three weeks of a game called Hoop Ball.
Hoop Ball is a 13-step lead-up process before we play the actual game. The process starts by just throwing and catching, then adding movement, then a hula hoop, defense after that and then very small sided games. The game is then finally introduced with two teams playing against each other, two balls and four hula-hoops.
The reason we started the school year with this game is that it teaches the students to move without the ball, work hard to get open, lose their defender, and to work together as a team. These skills will be and can be used in other sports such as lacrosse, basketball, ice hockey, football, team handball, field hockey, ultimate Frisbee, and soccer.
