When you think about your math classrooms in middle school, what comes to mind? You may be like us and remember memorizing facts and formulas, completing mountains of workbook pages, working independently, teacher-centered instruction and tests (lots of tests). While there are benefits to aspects of traditional math learning, there are also so many innovative ways to reach students.
Guidance + Counseling
Social-Emotional Learning is integrated into the whole program at The Woods Academy - inside and outside the classroom.
Social-Emotional Learning is integrated into the whole program at The Woods Academy - inside and outside the classroom. Starting in Montessori, our students begin to learn how to be a better citizen of the world through guidance lessons and teachable moments throughout the day. We have a child psychologist on staff along with a registered nurse and dedicated teachers who support our students wholeheartedly.
Our Guidance Team leads students through a range of age-appropriate lessons and activities that help them live a life of curiosity and explore the world around them.
In the Lower School guidance program, emotional intelligence is foundational to all of our teaching. Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to relate to others in an empathetic and caring manner; it builds on interpersonal relationships and a concern for the community.
The Woods Academy takes a comprehensive, developmental approach in teaching guidance to our Grade 5 and 6 students. This includes developmentally appropriate information related to matters of family life including wellness, health, nutrition, hygiene, exercise, physiology, and the biology of their changing bodies according to grade level.
In Grades 7 and 8, students are presented with a curriculum focused on issues of the 21st century including family life (encompassing values, personal integrity, family systems, community building, diversity/stereotyping, substance abuse, sexuality, relationships, and faith), and The Woods Academy Youth Series (WAYS).
In the guidance program, Montessori children have lessons in a variety of areas including identifying feelings, maintaining friendships, solving problems, and dealing with tattling, teasing, bullying, and bossiness. Media literacy and nutrition are also discussed. Social skills are strengthened in these small weekly playgroups where sharing, fairness, and communication are emphasized.
