For Jerome Williams, Class of 1987, The Woods Academy is more than just a school—it's a transformative experience that shaped his academic and athletic journey and continues to influence his life as a parent and coach. His story reflects the profound impact of a nurturing educational environment where confidence is cultivated, and lifelong connections are formed.
A Grandmother's Vision
Jerome's path to The Woods Academy began with his grandmother, the first college graduate in their family. As an English teacher, she valued education deeply and, after thorough research, decided that her grandson would attend The Woods Academy. Using her retirement savings, she ensured that Jerome had the opportunity to thrive in an environment that prioritized both academic excellence and personal growth.
"I didn't know what The Woods Academy was," Jerome recalls, "but once I got there, I realized it was different. The teachers took the time to make sure I understood everything."
Coming from a public school system where large class sizes and a one-size-fits-all approach were the norm, Jerome was struck by the personalized attention and small class sizes at The Woods Academy. With only 17 students in his eighth-grade class, he experienced a level of care and support that was entirely new to him.
Building Confidence On and Off the Court
Academically, Jerome initially struggled but soon found encouragement from his English teacher, Ms. Piwko. "She gave me that tough mom love," he says with a smile. "She told me, 'You're smarter than what you're saying. You're an A-B student.' And eventually, I believed her." Her faith in him transformed his academic performance and instilled a belief in his own potential that carried through the rest of his educational journey.
Athletically, The Woods Academy was equally impactful. After failing to make his middle school basketball team in public school, Jerome found redemption on The Woods Academy's team. "Everybody made the team," he jokes, "but we went on to win the championship, and that boosted my confidence." This renewed sense of self-assurance propelled him forward, eventually leading to a successful basketball career that culminated in the NBA.

A Lasting Influence
The culture at The Woods Academy also introduced Jerome to a world of academic ambition. "In the hallways, everyone was talking about where they were going next—Georgetown Prep, Georgetown Visitation … Yale," he remembers. "That environment made me feel like I belonged, like I could achieve those things too."
After graduating from The Woods Academy, Jerome carried that mindset with him through high school and college, where he excelled academically and athletically, eventually earning a scholarship to Georgetown University. There, he graduated on the Dean's List—an achievement he credits in part to the foundation laid at The Woods Academy.
Returning to Give Back
Years later, as a parent, Jerome found himself drawn back to The Woods Academy. With his family living in Bethesda, he knew he wanted his son, Jeremiah, to experience the same supportive community that had meant so much to him. When the opportunity arose to become the head coach of the basketball team, Jerome embraced it wholeheartedly.
"The Woods Academy is about love," he says. "From the moment you walk in the door, you feel it. The teachers, the staff—everyone is on the same team to help your child succeed."
This spirit of collaboration and care is something Jerome values deeply. With direct communication between parents and teachers, he feels empowered to support his son's academic journey. "Three of Jeremiah's teachers have my cell number," he shares. "They text me updates during the day. That kind of communication means my son is thriving."

A Legacy That Lives On
Looking ahead, Jerome envisions a future where his family's connection to The Woods Academy endures. "I expect Jeremiah and his family to always have a connection to this place," he reflects. "The Woods Academy gave me confidence and a sense of belonging, and I know it will do the same for him."
For Jerome Williams, The Woods Academy is not just a chapter in his past—it's a living legacy that continues to shape his family and the wider community. With his leadership on the basketball court and his advocacy for the school's future, he is ensuring that the spirit of The Woods Academy thrives for generations to come.
