Chi-Emeka Egwuaga, Class of 2010: Building a Life of Significance

Evelyn Mena

Since graduating from The Woods Academy in 2010, Chi-Emeka Egwuaga's journey has taken her from the classrooms of Bethesda to the fast-paced legal world of New York City. Now a fourth-year associate at the prestigious law firm Latham & Watkins, Emeka reflects on the path that led her to her career and the lasting influence The Woods Academy has had on her life.

A Career in Law: Problem-Solving on a Grand Scale

After completing her undergraduate studies in history at the College of William & Mary, with a minor in religious studies, Emeka moved to New York in 2019 to attend Columbia Law School. Following a brief return to Maryland during the pandemic, she settled in New York permanently in 2021 to embark on her legal career. Today, Emeka specializes in lender-side leveraged finance, a complex field where she represents banks and large credit funds in their transactions with private equity firms. She says, “We’re the lawyers who help those loans happen.”

The work is demanding, but Emeka thrives on the challenge. "It's an intense environment, but you learn so much," she says. "You get a unique view of how capitalism works and how things are built. It requires a lot of creative problem-solving and teamwork." For Emeka, with every new case, she learns something new and collects different tools along the way—skills she uses in her profession and daily life.

Her passion for the law stems from her academic interests. "I became interested in law through my studies in history and religious studies. Learning how lawyers shape the world inspired me to pursue this career," she explains. Law school, she adds, "teaches you how to think—it makes you more curious and critical about the world around you."

The Woods Academy: A Foundation for Lifelong Learning

Emeka joined the Woods Academy in sixth grade and immediately felt welcomed by the tight-knit community. "I only knew one other person when I arrived, but I had the best time and made friendships that I still cherish today," she says. Among those lifelong friends are Amanda Pierce and Caroline Tann, with whom she remains close. "Amanda's family was like my second home; I was there every weekend," she recalls fondly.

Her love for history began in the classrooms of Mr. Clubbs and Mrs. Piwko. "They were phenomenal teachers who made a huge impact on me," Emeka says. "Their classes sparked my interest in history and how we think about the world, ultimately leading me to law school."

Beyond academics, Emeka treasures memories of class trips and the spring musical. "Our trip to Gettysburg was unforgettable, and being part of the seventh-grade production of Willy Wonka and eighth-grade Beauty and the Beast was such a unique experience. It was amazing to see everyone step out of their comfort zones and support each other," she reflects.

Celebrating 50 Years of the Woods Academy

As The Woods Academy celebrates its 50th anniversary, Emeka recognizes the school's profound influence. "It feels like it's been around forever because it's such a pillar of the community," she says. "The Woods prepares you for what comes next. I was terrified of high school, but I quickly realized how well-prepared I was. The academic foundation I received—especially in language arts—gave me the skills to succeed."

Emeka credits The Woods with teaching her how to excel academically and be part of a caring community. "The sense of belonging I experienced at The Woods is something I've tried to recreate everywhere I go," she shares.

Advice for Current Students: Cherish the Moment

To current Woods students, Emeka offers this advice: "Be nice to your teachers, and enjoy the present. In middle school, it's easy to wish you were older, but these moments with your friends are special and fleeting. Take the time to appreciate them."

She also emphasizes the value of kindness and inclusion. "Leading a life of significance means positively impacting others and letting people know they are loved and seen," she says. "I was fortunate to have amazing people at The Woods who made me feel that way, and I strive to do the same for others."

Living a Life of Significance

For Emeka, leading a life of significance means using her talents and experiences to uplift others. Whether through her work in corporate law or her personal relationships, she remains committed to making a difference. "It's about standing up for others, speaking out, and ensuring no one feels alone," she says.

As she looks back on her time at The Woods Academy, Emeka remains grateful for the community that shaped her. "The Woods gave me so much happiness and such a unique middle school experience. It's an honor to be part of this community and to carry those lessons with me."

From Bethesda to New York City, Emeka Egwuaga continues to embody the values instilled in her at The Woods Academy—curiosity, community, and a commitment to leading a life of significance.
