For Katie Jeffress '12, a lifelong member of The Woods Academy community, the path to becoming an equine veterinarian began with two simple influences: family and a spark of curiosity.
“My grandparents both worked at The Woods, so it always felt like home,” she reflects. “But what really stands out to me is where my love of science began.” That spark can be traced back to a middle school classroom.
“I always say I attribute my love of science to my seventh grade teacher, Mr. A,” Katie shares. “He was so passionate and enthusiastic about the subject that it made it feel exciting. It made it feel like it was cool to love science.”
That early encouragement transformed how she approached school. While she enjoyed many subjects, science became the reason she felt energized to learn and show up each day. “It was the subject that made me want to be there,” she says.
A Foundation of Confidence and Curiosity

As a “lifer” at The Woods, Katie experienced firsthand the power of small class sizes and strong relationships with teachers. Those early years helped build the confidence she would later rely on during major transitions in her life.
“The one-on-one time with teachers made a big difference,” she explains. “It made me feel comfortable asking for help and prepared me for what came next.”
That preparation became especially important when she transitioned to a larger public high school and, later, to studying abroad. Along the way, the values instilled at The Woods—curiosity, compassion, and confidence—continued to guide her.
“Having that curiosity to try new things, the compassion for others, and the confidence to take big steps has been so important,” she says.
Taking a Leap Across the World
After high school, Katie made a bold decision: to study abroad in the United Kingdom.
Encouraged by family and a desire to explore something different, she enrolled at Royal Holloway, University of London. The transition was not easy. Being far from home, adjusting to a new culture, and navigating independence tested her resilience. “It was a huge change,” she recalls. “Going to college is already a big step, but moving to another country made it even bigger.”
What began as a leap of faith turned into a defining chapter. Katie not only completed her undergraduate studies abroad but remained in the United Kingdom for nearly a decade, earning her master’s degree and ultimately pursuing veterinary school.
Looking back, she sees that decision as one of the most important of her life. “I’m really proud of myself for doing that,” she says. “It shaped who I am.”
Finding Her Path in Veterinary Medicine

While Katie always loved animals, her path within veterinary medicine was not immediately clear. It was during her final year of training, through hands-on rotations and real-world experience, that everything came into focus. “I knew I wanted to work with animals, but I wasn’t sure in what way,” she explains. “It was through trying different things that I realized what I really loved.”
That process of exploration ultimately led her to equine medicine, a highly specialized field focused on the care of horses.
Today, Katie is completing an internship in Equine Medicine and Surgery at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, where no two days are the same. From early morning rounds to emergency care and advanced diagnostics, her work is both demanding and deeply rewarding.
“You can have a critical patient come in that you’re really worried about,” she says. “And then to see them turn a corner, recover, and go home—it’s incredibly meaningful.”
Caring for Animals and the People Who Love Them
For Katie, the impact of her work extends beyond the animals she treats. “I try to think about it from the owner’s perspective,” she explains. “If it were my horse, I would want someone who communicates clearly and reassures me that everything possible is being done.”
That perspective shapes how she approaches each case, with a focus on compassion, trust, and connection. In a community where horses are deeply valued, those relationships matter.
“It’s about making sure both the animal and the owner feel cared for,” she says.
A Life of Purpose
Katie’s journey has taken her from a close-knit classroom at The Woods to an international education and into a specialized and impactful career. Through every step, one lesson has remained constant: follow what excites you.
“If you feel a pull toward something, go for it,” she advises. “Even if you’re nervous or unsure, trying is the most important part.” That willingness to take risks, embrace challenges, and pursue her passions has defined her path.
“I don’t have any regrets,” she reflects. “I followed what I loved, and it led me here.”
Full Circle
When Katie reflects on her time at The Woods, she does so with gratitude and pride. “It was such a positive experience,” she says. “The learning, the community, and the support I had there set me up for everything that came after.”
That foundation continues to shape her life and work today.
“The Woods helped me grow into who I am,” she says. “Those years gave me the confidence and the foundation to pursue my goals.”
Through her dedication to science, her compassion for animals and their owners, and her commitment to growth, Katie Jeffress is living a true life of purpose—one that began with curiosity in a classroom and continues today in the care she provides every day.
