For Rachel Thomas, Class of 2008, a career in advertising isn’t just about selling products—it’s about shaping perceptions and influencing cultural trends. As an alumna of The Woods Academy, Rachel has built a career that blends creativity, strategy, and problem-solving, leading her to work with some of the most impactful brands in the health and wellness space. Her journey from the supportive environment of The Woods to the fast-paced world of advertising in New York City is a testament to how early educational experiences can shape a life of significance.

From Early Creativity to a Thriving Career

Rachel's path to the advertising industry was paved with a deep love for creativity. "I have always enjoyed doing creative activities and knew that I wanted that to be a large part of my career," she shares. After starting her professional journey at a creative agency in Virginia—where she worked on print ads, brand development, and creative strategy—Rachel made the leap to New York City. Now, she focuses on clients in the health and wellness sector, where she uses her design expertise to create "meaningful, thumb-stopping designs and campaigns."

Her work is not just about aesthetics. It’s about driving change and building brands that stand the test of time. "The ability to combine creativity with strategy and problem-solving in a tangible way is what ultimately pushed me to pursue a career in this field," Rachel explains.

The Woods Academy: A Foundation of Confidence and Creativity

Reflecting on her years at The Woods Academy, Rachel credits the school with helping her develop the core values that continue to guide her today. "The Woods Academy laid a strong foundation for me, not just academically, but in helping me develop the values of confidence, teamwork, and creativity," she says.

The nurturing environment fostered a spirit of curiosity and exploration—qualities that are essential in the ever-evolving world of advertising. This encouragement gave Rachel the confidence to pursue a career where creativity and bold ideas are at the forefront.

Rachel's educational path after The Woods led her to the Connelly School of the Holy Child for high school, followed by the University of Maryland at College Park. With each step, she carried the lessons learned during her formative years, applying them to her creative pursuits and professional growth.

Advice for Today’s Students: Be Kind, Be Curious, Keep Learning

When asked what advice she would offer to current Woods Academy students, Rachel emphasizes the importance of curiosity and lifelong learning. "Be kind, be curious, and always keep learning, as the most successful individuals are those who are continuously evolving," she advises.

This mindset has not only shaped her career but also her approach to life. Whether working on impactful campaigns or fostering personal relationships, Rachel believes in leading with kindness and purpose.

Celebrating 50 Years of The Woods Academy

The Woods Academy’s 50th anniversary holds a special place in Rachel's heart. "The 50th anniversary of The Woods Academy is a milestone that speaks to the strength and enduring impact of the school’s mission and values," she reflects. "It reminds me of the strong foundation the school provided and the lifelong friendships and connections that I continue to cherish."

As the school celebrates this important milestone, Rachel is excited for its future and the next generation of leaders it will shape. She remains proud to be part of The Woods Academy's legacy and looks forward to witnessing the school's continued growth and evolution over the next 50 years.

"Whether through my career or personal life, I strive to leave a legacy of kindness, hard work, and inspiration," she says.

In her professional life, she is committed to creating work that is both impactful and socially responsible. Outside the office, Rachel approaches life with optimism and purpose, striving to make choices that reflect the greater good.
