OLD - Distance Learning

The Woods Academy Distance Learning Plan is designed to help students and teachers stay connected with one another and to support students’ continued growth and development while the campus is closed.

Learning Continues

Our plan addresses the full range of children’s learning—academic, social-emotional, and physical—with meaningful, age-appropriate opportunities for learning, both on- and off-screen. We know that our students learn best and increase their independence through interactive, hands-on activities and by doing. Teachers hare lessons, activities, and resources using routines and formats that are as familiar and engaging as possible.

We recognize that each family’s circumstances are different, and we aim to provide activities and lessons that will be manageable for our entire community.

Schedule

Class schedules remain the same. During class time students may have a synchronous (live) class, asynchronous (recorded) class, or assigned work from the instructor.

Delivery & Instruction

All students in Grades 1-8 use a school-issued device to access Google Classroom, a blended learning platform, while at home. Our versatile faculty, several of whom are Google Certified Educators, have expanded the use of Google Classroom, a tool already in use in Grades 5-8, to deliver curriculum to all students age 3 to Grade 8.

With tools like Zoom and Google Hangouts Meet, teachers are able to deliver synchronous classes as well as one-on-one and small group sessions to students at all grade levels. Teachers also make use of tools like WeVideo and Screencastify to deliver recorded, on-demand instruction. Other learning apps already in use at The Woods, like Happy Numbers and IXL for math and Lexia for reading, enable differentiated learning activities that our teachers can track and evaluate from afar.

Student Support Services

We continue to offer our students emotional and academic support. Our guidance teachers, advisors, and learning support coordinator are available to meet with students by appointment from 9 AM - 3 PM each school day.

We are grateful for the near seamless transition Woods made relative to other schools, especially MCPS. You were better prepared and your teachers better skilled with the technology necessary. Thank you also for the morning announcements. It is nice to have the connection to the school community.

Gratitude. Even though there have been hiccups, The Woods is well ahead of most schools in the area, and light years ahead of MCPS. And that is because of the dedication of teachers and staff.

    Community Matters

This spring it was more important than ever for our community to remain connected and engaged. While at times, we were disappointed that we could not gather and celebrate all that makes The Woods so special, we still found creative and memorable ways to come together in grand Woods fashion. Here you can enjoy these community-building experiences for yourself.
