When you think about your math classrooms in middle school, what comes to mind? You may be like us and remember memorizing facts and formulas, completing mountains of workbook pages, working independently, teacher-centered instruction and tests (lots of tests). While there are benefits to aspects of traditional math learning, there are also so many innovative ways to reach students.
Do You Want To Build A Snowman?
In third grade, we have been focusing on writing with detail so that our readers can visualize our work. Being that it’s winter, we thought it would be fun to practice these writing skills with a snowman writing and drawing activity!
The third graders were first asked to draw a snowman of their own design. Once they were finished drawing, they were asked to write a detailed description of their snowman so that another person could recreate it. The students were encouraged to include details about their snowman's body, facial features, clothing, and more. Once their descriptions were complete, the third-grade classrooms swapped writings and got to work creating each other’s snowmen.
The students did a great job with this project! Their finished products speak for themselves!
