Planet Personification

Planet Personification

Our Grade 3 students are all about the solar system this trimester! From the planets and the sun to the International Space Station and astronauts, we are exploring all the facets that are associated with the great vacuum we know as outer space!

After many readings, videos, and presentations about the solar system, we decided it was time to dive even deeper into the planets that make up our solar system. What better way to do this than a cross-curricular activity? After learning about personification, the students were tasked to bring a planet in the solar system to life through animated poetry. In order to do this properly, they needed to research a single planet in great detail first. The students were given a research packet to help guide their investigation. Using the information from different websites, articles, and books, the students identified the elements that make up their planet, the distance their planet is from the sun, how many days it takes their planet to rotate the sun, the temperature of the planet, etc. Once they completed their research packet, they were ready to move onto the creative portion of the task. The students applied their research to complete an “I am” poem template about their planets. With sentence starters such as “I feel”, “I try”, “I wonder”, and so forth, the students described their planets in great detail from the point of view of their planets . To finish off the project, the students drew a humanized picture of their planet as it was described in their poem.

The students really enjoyed this project, and the finished products speak for themselves! If you want to know more about the planets in our solar system, come read our planet poems! You’ll learn things that are out of this world!
